That probably saved c. 2-3 grams... there is no way I'm drilling my STI for such minimal saving. But thanks for the post.

I know you're asking about tuning the DA7800.. but if you're into saving the most weight, like about 70-90g (depending on the year and mod) go to Record ERGO's with a jtek shiftmate or similar mod.

I was thinking of doing that, not sure you read the first page of this thread, but I didn't want to sacrifice shifting performance... Plus I got the DA 7800 STI brand new at an amazing price, so I couldn't refuse.

I'm planning on using campy record shifters with DA rear drivetrain and campy fd ct. reason is that the campy shifters are cheaper and lighter. I hoping this would work smoothly as far as shifting goes? Has anyone try this combo.

thanks for any info.

The RD shifting should still remain smooth. A mate has that same setup and says there is a difference, but only minimal. When he first installed the JTek, shifting was not looking up to par... but after some fine tuning he's happy. The FD on the other hand, from the general concensus, is that a Campy cannot shift like a DA... But I cannot personally confirm this as I have never given Campy a chance. The setup you suggest, definitely makes for the lightest...

This has been a topic of previous discussion and you can get different advice on it.

It can work fine but just realize that DA rear derailleur has a different pitch then campy and will need to be modified accordingly. Some will use a jtek shiftmate, some will try to mod where the cable attaches the RD, some will leave it stock but get perhaps not pefect shifting on 2 or more cogs.

but on the inside of them, they have two screws, I undid these and took the cap off. This cap was to seal the flightdeck. and there was a cable in there. So I ripped that out. I will never use flight deck! SRM first, Polar, then..........

totaly, I think.......8-10grams forgot and Im not taking the off to weigh it!

This is the simplest mod - I've done it to all my DA shifters...

Up till now I had never really explored Campy just because I've always thought they were more expensive in general. But wow...the Record Ergo's really are quite a bit less. I still don't feel like messing around with my DA7800 setup though.

I just set up my bike with the Campy record Shifters , Record CT FD, with Shimano 9spd RD and Shimano Cassette. I used the Hubbub method (re-routing the rear derailleur cable). At first, I thought it worked satisfactory, but after everything has a chance to break-in, my shifting actually improved and it's now shifting just as well as when I had the DA shifters. Overall, I think this is a pretty cool setup..

So I got the DA FD + RD 7800 w/ the STI shifters, but my cassette is a Steinbach and my chain a KMC X10; my mind is starting to tell me to get a DA cassette and chain, but another part of me says to go ww and stick with what you got? Do you or anyone think I can still achieve smooth crisp shifting DA is know for?

i use a wipperman lightweight model chain with ti sprockets and pulsion cranks on an otherwise full DA drive train - absolutely no problems with shifting....

however the record levers are VERY enticing....

Not the best picture, but it saved me 6 grams. Left the cable in there, so it could easily be 10 grams savings in total.

I use the BTP clamps with Dura Ace 7800 shifters. They fit just fine!!
They however are a bit tricky to mount.

Normally I use my Syntace equipment to be sure I use the right amount of strenght to the screws. The position, size, etc. makes it almost impossible to use my equipment, so I did it the old fashioned way, with my armstrenght as indicator

sorry to bring up this old thread but I'm currently having a go at shedding weight of of the 7800 STI's.

This is were I'm at so far. I can't give you detailed number in terms of weight lost yet, but I'm saving all the parts to put them on an accurate scale. My estimate
is 15-20 grams lost so far.

I'm also considering drilling the main mounting bolt and removing material of the clamps. The plastic bodies also had some porky sections which can be shaved.

This one has me puzzled, what is the screw for? the one just beneath the spring.

This is with Veloflyte carbon nameplate, flightdeck guts removed (+- 7g), flightdeck coverplates shaved and epoxied back in place.
One clamp was shaved very conservatively for a weight savings of .5 g, the mounting bolt was drilled about a mm deep and saved .2 grams. The steel bolts are very tough. An alternative would be sourcing Ti hex bolts and shaving the head to fit the clamps. The clamps will be shaved more and the plastic body will be drilled strategicaly. 400g is the target, original weight was 423.2 g.
