My BH G5 Review !
Moderator: robbosmans
Come on: when a frame is advertised to weigh a certain amount, it should weigh that amount, not require stripping the paint.
If they sold an unpainted version, then you can use that number. But they don't. So "unpainted" is irrelevant. What are the odds the warranty remains valid if you strip the paint?
The claimed weight, presumibly on the smallest frame, is 810 grams. If mass is proportional to size, then:
52: 810
54: 841
56: 872
57: 888
58.5: 911
If they sold it as a 1000 gram frame: great! Maybe a 100 gram here or there doesn't matter much. But for whatever reason, folks care a lot about weight, and are willing to pay $3 to $10 per gram to reduce it. So basically each hundred grams misrepresented is like cheating on the price by $300 to $1000.
There's a lot more alternatives at 1 kg than at 810 grams (in the latter case, basically none, with this feature set).

DJ, always nice when you chime in with your sense of reason and objectivity. I completely agree with your assessment. When we heard that there was going to be a BB30, ISP, tapered headset, rear wheel cutout...etc. frame coming in the 800s I think many of were excited about the possibility. Now I feel let down.

MSRP for frameset is $3295 in the US.

the 1002 gr is with the rear derailleur hanger so the frame is 987 let say 15 gr for the hanger + its bolts. I have read 910gr for a 56 with no paint so 987gr with paint is possible.
I'am still happy with 13.5 lbs complete with garmin sensor magnets and this with Michelin light butyl ( like 80 gr) I have to put supersonic.
But most impotant like someone say I did not sacrifice anything as stifness or reliability.

I revised my frame weight scaling.. I assume total weight is proportional to the sum of seat tube length, top tube length, and chain stay length. Chain stays are narrower, but there's two of them. the other tubes I assume scale in proportion to these, so I didn't bother working out the trigonometry to calculate total tube length.
Anyway;
size st tt ht cs sum mass
xs 550 520 110 402 1582 810
s 600 540 120 402 1662 851
m 640 557 150 402 1749 896
l 680 570 185 402 1837 941
xl 710 585 195 402 1892 969
The rate of increase is a bit greater than just using the top tube length.

Having now seen one, the fit and finish is not better than Giant or Specialized... And Trek's new madone is better.
I wouldnt call it a pig either, but being off 200 grams or so in this day and age isnt OK.
None of that is to say the BH is anything but a nice bike. I would expect it to be.

The question is, taking into the quality of fit and finish, and the weight gain, whether it is worth the $3300 asking price for a frameset? Seems like there are many other options at this price point that are better value for the money (i.e. Parlee Z4, Look, Madone...etc.). Personally, I think I would rather spend my money elsewhere.

Hey I'll leave it to someone else to try to tell other people what is and isnt a "value" relative to 3000+ dollar frames and 5000+ dollar bikes
Honestly I would want to ride one before I said it didnt compete with Look or Specialized or Giant or others. I just didnt see a finish that was a lot better than others in the price range and the weight is higher than spec (but it's not a pig). Neither of those for me make it a bad bike.

why is everyone so hard on BH. most european brands always exaggerate on weights.
pinarello dogma $5500 super exotic carbon frame claimed weight is 850gm for a 54cm. in reality painted it weighs >1050. but no one is bitching. italians alway get a free pass

Bingo.
Which makes that 11 pound Colnago in the intro thread all the more remarkable!
I was quoted an MSRP of $3,395 for the G5 and was able to get 15% off that price from an authorized dealer. I am going to pass on the frame for a build though.
