They make spacers to address your problem, 1 or 2 will fix your problem. Quality bike parts dealers can order them in a couple of very thin sizes. you'd need the 68X 108 or whatever is the next size, but that would set the crank out there.

whats the spacer for?

68 is the distance the bearings are apart

108 is the axle length....

the only place a spacer will go is behind the drive side BB cup..... as its the non drive side thats too close then that IMHO will only make it worse

68mm & 70mm are the distances between the bearings..... sweet FA to do with threads other than english bottom brackets have 68mm axles & ittalian ones have 70mm??

there is so much duff advice on this site its unbelievable

Some duff observations
English bb 1.37 x 24 tpi (1.37 inches = 34.8mm)
Italian bb 36 x 24 tpi (36mm diameter = 1.42 inches)

Which is why English BB cups barely touch the sides of an Italian BB shell.

So to resolve the frame problem fit a couple of different Chainset/BB combinations. If the result is similar - uneven gap on all - then the frame is probably at fault.

Sounds like he just needs to set his frame on fire. If he can't ride it no one can!
