I want to get a 15lb bike. For the frame I could either build up a bike from s3 tubing (I can weld) and anodize it all black or I could start with a Dale. I would like to get a kit from gvhbikes.com, ultegra 10 2005. For the wheelset, I am thinking of uprading to the 420 or the 350. Which would you pick? Are the 420s aero compared to let's say some 404s? I think I will also upgrade to 3tt prima 199 bars and syntace f99. I would also like a use alien carbon post. As for a saddle, I would go for an slr or the new arione carbon. What is the least expensive 300g fork for a 70kg rider? What else should I upgrade to get a 15lb bike? Cranks? bb? supersonics? veloflex records? light tubes? Any opininons on pedros milk cages? I would like to try keywin pedals. Alternatives?

First off, you need to say what type of riding you will be doing. All Day enduro? Racing? This will sway at least my opinion. Second, what size bike do you need? This will also affect stiffness and the fact that I am selling a lightly used 58cm CAAD7 (you interested?)

A couple of points about frame building:- the S3 tube set for TT is steel, it will not be anodizable. Being able to weld does not mean you can build a good frame (Not as easy as it looks) if you still want to go down this path check out FrameForum and the framebuilding phread list (I can gut you the url if you would like). Unless you are used to welding very thin and highly alloyed steel S3 is not a great place to start.

As for the parts on it will the Ultegra 10sp allow you to get down to 15lbs? You may need to look at other cranks and brakes. I havn't seen a pedros milk cage in about 3 years - I didn't know they were still made, but the Keywin pedals are great.

I could always galvanize it. Sorry, I don't know anything about anodizing  . How could l make it black without adding weight? I have made a fixie frame from zona and pix are coming, its not magic. The tubes were mitered by a robot  . Do you think galvanizing would look cool? I know it looks like the metal pipes I work with. What cranks should I get!? Maybe I should get the frame gold platted? I need 55, to 56. I will be doing crits and rolling road races. Thanks for the quick replies.

There is a process called blackening that my local toolmaker uses to protect aginst corosion on low use tools. I can't comment on durability or strengthof the finish as I dont know any more about it.

I spoke with some people close to my shop that do this sort of thing. The answer to my little problem is a nitrate coating. It's shiny. You're right there is more to framebuilding than just welding. I'm not too good in the brazing area though. Do you think it will be posiible for me to drop my bike to 15lbs by upgrading to 350s, 3t prima 199, syntace f99, use post, slr saddle, new cranks and bb. I tried using the pbc but I always miss stuff, it gives me a ridiculous weight. What cranks (need 52) and bb should I upgrade to? How much could it save me? How much weight do light cables save? I don't know about upgrading brakes. Does are important.
