Yep it is called marketing. For some Riis is the ueber pro, the perfectionists who wants to control everything and achieves great succes.
I think this is true.

But his victory in the 1997 Amstel Gold Race left me with the impression that something was terribly wrong with cycling.

Not enough people make those statements. Riis has always been a dirty rider, and he is starting a nice list of dopers under his direction, including Tyler Hamilton, who is guilty.
