I'm not a fan of bar tape. In fact I usually put small strips (really small) of skateboard grip tape on my bars. Not all over, just a bit in the drops and a bit on the top. It started to tair up my gloves, so I switched to the Fisik stuff with the holes and like it (nice and thin). Switched from that to hockey tape. Super sticky and very thin. Also have tried the tape from velox. Who knew they made tape? I didn't. BTI stocks it and you can get it from your LBS for pretty cheap. Good stuff and no plugs to mess with.

I don't own any Specialized bikes, but I recently discovered the 'Phat Wrap' and agree it is the best. Thick and comfy, good quality, doesn't tear like Deda or Fizik. This is coming from someone who usually hates Specialized!

I've used all sorts of tape when wrapping my bars.

Avenir Cork - Cheap. Great for about three weeks.
Fizik - Great tape, kinda thin for us glove-less types.
Lizard Skins - Absolutely the highest quality bar tape - I go gloveless with this tape.

Other options:

Tourna Grip - Any tennis players here? I had a box of this from 12 years ago when I was playing varsity tennis in High School. I've gone through half of it already, but this had the highest comfort when it was double layered on my bars. Not saying it's a viable option as the wear and tear is noticeable after one ride, but it was a great way to use up some tennis grip when I no longer played the sport.

Leather Bar Tape - I had the pleasure of riding one of my buddy's touring bikes that had some leather bar tape. It was heavenly. Not very weight-appropriate though, and I'm not sure what it would feel like when it's soaked from rain or sweat.

That to me, looks liek the Fizik Dual tape, but in all black.

Fizik will also be coming out with a new tape this fall that is supposed to compete directly with the Lizard Skins DSP tape.

Finally, I use Arundel Gecko Grip tape - great performance, at a reasonable price. How much more could you want? I don't go through bar tape much, and I have expensive bikes, but $35-40 for LS DSP tape, come on...
