It's understandable you'd like to go through the parts on a bike you are happy with. Get the low hanging fruit ($/gr) first until you are a bit more balanced.
It's when you start to spend over 2-4$ per gram saved it becomes an unhealthy exercise. Everyone has a different limit though.
