I gather you have a used pre-2015 Chorus group? How used?

How familiar are you with Campy? Do you know what a good shifter should feel like - unattached?

I can't help with the frame issue, but with the cable free both ends, can you pull it back and forth easily?

campy cable
don't know how used
very familiar with 10-speed campy (record, veloce/centaur), and know that NOBODY'S FD shifter should feel, or act this way
I tested the shifter at every step in the cable's path:
1. pulling the cable through the top of the shifter, and testing the actuation
2. routing the cable through the handlebar-section of housing, and testing the actuation
3. routing the cable through to the outlet hole on the seat tube (before clamping into the FD)

it fails at
4. clamping the cable into the FD

which makes me think that maybe there's something wrong with the FD. Or that the shifter and FD are incompatible. or maybe the FD is not functioning properly.
but there was a thread over at RBR with a guy who assembled a Campy EPS with the exact same issues.

maybe i'll try a new FD if the new ones are compatible with pre-2015 shifters. the new FDs look different from the one i have.

thanks for everybody's help

For Chorus and up the FD design changed completely in 2015. Easy to spot with a much longer arm.

You should be able to move the FD by hand through it's complete range. Can you?

So if looking for a new one just make sure it's the pre-2015 style.

should look like this

its definitely the first one and when moved by hand, the 11-chorus is noticably stiffer compared to my 10-record

the 15 FD isn't compatible with the pre-15 shifter?

different logo though

looks like its maybe a 2009:

now that i'm looking on line there seems to be a '09-'10 version, and '11-'14 version
maybe i'm running incompatible shifter/derailleur

I just went around my bike shed and tried several 10-speed Record FD's and a pre-2015 11-speed Chorus by hand. I'd say the Chorus definitely has more tension.

If I had to guess it feels like about 20-30% more.

why don't you take a picture of the cable exit area from the bb, clamped onto the fd.

i'm going to try the 11-14 version FD and see what that gets me.

funny thing is, i don't remember having these problems when it was on the ridley damocles

another thing, the first click on the main lever doesn't move the cable at all. it only moves on the 2nd click.

issue solved
i'm either a total genius, or a total dumb-ass
i inserted a length of the thin cable sheath through the bottom bracket section, where the cable makes the turn around over the metal cable guide.
Voila

is this the standard for internal cable routing?

... cable still doesn't move on the first click though

Doesn't the lever not moving on one of the trimming clicks mean that the cable tension is not correct?

apparently that could be the case, cuz i just solved that issue as well, with a little cable adjustment

just one last question, in which rear sprocket do you put the chain to adjust for the "3-clicks"?
I've seen the inner-most sprocket, and i've seen 3rd sprocket out, and 4th sprocket.

7th (4th) according to these guys.

http://blog.artscyclery.com/road/ask-a- ... railleurs/

Shift your rear derailleur into 7th gear and perform some test shifts to see if you can execute a clean front shift with just three clicks of the shifter.
