RD-R9100/R8000 manual: "add 1 to 3 links to set length of the chain"

RD-9000/6800 manual: "add 2 links to the “minimum number of links that can be connected”

Calculation results for different setup examples:

chainstay=405 big chainring=52 rear cog=28 unrounded ss chain length=52.11
RD-R9100/R8000 manual: 53 or 54
RD-9000/6800 manual: 54

chainstay=415 big chainring=52 rear cog=28 unrounded ss chain length=52.89
RD-R9100/R8000 manual: 54
RD-9000/6800 manual: 54

chainstay=425 big chainring=46 rear cog=28 unrounded ss chain length=53.08
RD-R9100/R8000 manual: 54 or 55
RD-9000/6800 manual: 55

The small-small / Campy method is still better since it defines your max possible chain length.

Exactly, why re invent the wheel? If your derailleur is the corect model for the ratios used then small small is simples.

with Di2, i can no longer shift into small small. new firmware prevents cross chaining. so maybe that's why they went to big big since you can shift into that combo without synchro shift activated.

You can try small-small method on di2 with cross chainring protection using temporary washer between RD and dropout
