Depends on how long your derailleur hanger is.

I can run 11-32 with a short Red derailleur on my bike.

Chain: The chain needs to fit over you largest chainring & largest cog + some extra. If it doesn't, shifting big/big will rip off the derailleur.

Thank you
then on the other hand, if i change chain for fitting with 30T, is is also able to use for 28T?
i'd like to know whether i can use both 11-30t and 11-28T with one chain & RD

Size your chain for the 11-30, then you will be fine with the 11-28.

I run a Miche cassette with a 30t largest cog with a short cage Red22 RD. No problem.

I am planning on running 11-30T with my Force 22 RD as well. I currently running 11-28T and I can see with the B-screw, I can some adjustment to go.

I am waiting for Ultegra 11-30T. SRAM only has 11-30T in 1190, right? I thought about Dura Ace, but the price difference between Ultegra and DA is just a little much.

Working on one bike doesn't mean it'll absolutely work on another.

Screw your B-screw in to max, shift to your current largest cog, find the narrowest gap between cassette and upper pulley and then measure with a vernier caliper how much space you have between your chain and cassette/upper-pulley. If you have like 10mm there you can go up 4t on the cassette. I calculated that 4t increases the radius by around 6-7mm.

Remember that the chain and at least ~4mm of extra space needs to be present in the space between pulley and cassette. Going from 2nd to 1st cog is going to be noisy and jumpy if less than 4mm because the chain has to first go over the teeth before it can set onto the cog.

No problem going 36t cassette with a mid cage 6800 derailleur on a trek domane. Shimano specifies 32t max. I am 99% sure a 38t would work aswell.

A tip that I've never tried is to reverse the B-screw and let it rest on it's head. That way it's at it's absolute max.

I run without problem Sram Force 22 short cage with Shimano 105 11-30 cassette and chain. Works great....

Just make sure your chain length is correct.

I use this calculator

https://www.bergfreunde.eu/chain-length-calculator/

For compact crankset 50/34 recommended chain length is 106 links.
