I am setting a TT-bike up for some upcoming races this fall (and next season). One area where I am not sure in which direction to go is bar tape. Currently the bike has some generic foam tape fitted, but I will redo cables and tape anyway. I'd like something firm but grippy as not too much weight is put on the aerobars anyway. Would using something like the classic Velox Cotton tape be a good choice for getting some grip without adding bulk to the bars? What are the resident TT-monsters using?

Disclaimer: not a TT monster.

Lizard Skins 1.8mm. I just switched to 2.5mm a couple of days ago and will be switching back to 1.8mm in the near future.

So at least one vote for the Velox tape. I have the impression that the Lizard Skins tape is very tacky, something which I in general don't enjoy. I think I'll try the Velox route first, but I am considering wrapping the basebar grips with a thicker tape as thats the only riding position where you put weight on your hands on a TT bike. Maybe I should go for Lizardskins there and Velox on the areobars...

I find the 1.8 less tacky than the 2.5

It is obviously a personal thing. You asked for "grippy" and light, which I believe the Lizard Skins to be. I wouldn't call it "tacky" but to someone else, I can't say. If you can get to a shop that sells it, there is a little patch on the outside of the box that allows you to feel it. Or order online and return it unopened I guess.

I have no affiliation with Lizard Skins, it just works for me and I have it in the 1.8 or 2.5 versions on all my bikes, and most of my wife's as well.

Bullhorns only with the 1.8 was 14g on the bike in my signature. I'd guess the same again and a little more for the extensions, depending on how you like to tape.

It's grippy enough for me. I use Deda tape for all bikes. Cross/gravel, road and tt. Light too.
