I'm from Canada but I've been wanting an Aeroad for the longest time. I happen to have a family member visiting Germany very soon and there's a possibility I'll get one.

Too bad they don't ship to us and I'm on the hook for a 800EUR VAT charge (trying to find a way to avoid it because after all, my family member doesn't live in EU and the bike won't be used in EU)

How did you get yours?

Ship a bike box over in cargo hold with a trash frame in it. Dump it and return with the Canyon back in its place?

take everything out of the box, turn box inside out, then repack everything? No experience with this, but i seem to remember hearing about it before

It doesn't matter if they live in EU or not, they have to pay for the VAT and they are no way to get reimbursed. This is the price to pay for exclusivity I guess. You should probably wait at the end of August when Canyon will start selling in North America (US).

Buy a bike suitcase in gernany and unpack the bike? Put some dirt on it? And there you go?

Or ship to my place in Denmark and I'll ship it to you :beerchug:

Canyon isn't exactly known for prompt shipping, even for domestic German orders.

I didn’t read this super carefully, but it suggests you can get a VAT refund:
Embassy and Consulates General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Canada wrote:
All goods purchased in Germany are subject to a value-added tax ("Mehrwertsteuer/MWST" or "Umsatzsteuer") of 19% (or 7% on certain goods). Tourists can apply for a VAT refund for goods purchased in and exported to a country outside of the European Union within three months after the date of the purchase.

Lots of hoops to jump through, but that’s how these things usually work. More info and forms here: http://www.canada.diplo.de/Vertretung/kanada/en/02/customs/vat__return.html.

Hope it applies in your case. Good luck.

It's a sexy looking bike but the horror stories of year long delays, a ridiculous $500 postal charge and prices that are mediocre for where I live mean that nobody buys one here, almost ever. It's cheaper to fly to the factory and bring it home! Yet weirdly other companies can ship internationally for less than half.

I am in Toronto and I love my Aeroad, but most of the shipping stories are true.
If you don't mind waiting, you are better off waiting a few months for them to hit North America unless your family is able get the VAT refund.

For me, I purchased mine during last years TDF sale and had it shipped to my family in Hong Kong. Hong Kong has no sales tax and no import tax, but the shipping from Canyon was hefty, but still less then the vat that I was able to avoid. I then had someone bring it over from HK which added another $200cdn in oversize luggage cost.

The story!
I've ordered the lowest model with mechanical Ultegra, which did not have the integrated handle bar and stem. Before ordering, I've spoke with customer service asking if I could order the integrated handle bar with my purchase, and what it cost. I was quoted something like $250usd with all the spacers, dust cap, basically everything I needed for the integrated bars. Feeling awesome, I waited for the TDF sale, and made my order. Since I could not add the extra parts using the online shopping cart, one hour later after ordering the aeroad online, I emailed them asking to add the integrated handle bar and a oval 7*9 carbon seat post clamp to my order. They reply next day stating that it was too late and that the handle bar is not $250usd but $400usd and that I had to add another $100usd for shipping. Even when I show them the quote i got from email was to no resolution, I sucked it up and paid $450usd for them, they knocked off $50 after countess email bitching. Being that they do not ship to Canada, as stated, I had everything shipped to HK, and the bike and parts became a second order. So, many moons later, the bike got to HK safely, and they made a mistake and must have shipped the parts using my credit card address vs shipping address and they came to Canada. They further messes with my plan as I had to pay another $100 is tax and duty for the parts. Not only that, a screw for the handle bar cable cover was missing and they sent me the 7*9 saddle clamp for the ultimate, not the aeroad. They ended up shipping the screw and another saddle clamp MONTHS later to HK free of charge and they paid for the duty and cost of shipping for the original mistake to Canada. However, this time they ship me the original saddle clamp and not the 7*9. Talked to canyon, and months again later, I finally got the right saddle clamp. I don't know why it takes 2-3 months before they ship out these small parts. The experience for me was not the most painful as I was recovering from a crash and couldn't ride anyways, but if I needed that bike for summer time, it would have been ugly.

That is a horrible amount of logistics for a frame. OP, I'd wait.

YGPM.

Also, I believe my family member is going to a city where there's a Canyon boutique. Don't they stock bikes there anyway or ship to a store?

I guess waiting for them to hit the US shores is an option and hopefully Trump continues to mess it up @ the White House and have a the US $ fall.

I live in Gibraltar.

My canyon was shipped EX-VAT as im outside of the EU for VAT purposes. I do however need to pay Import Duty. Luckily for me, there is no VAT on bikes, bicycle goods etc...

only pitfall for me was the Eur250 shipping, which was in the end more or less the same as the VAT saved.

I saw that there was a system that only delivered a different model to the down tube logo.
Is it gone?

Take a good look at the homepage

Hi g32ecs,

I am either blind or don't have enough post to sent PM.
I am located in Richmond Hill, and rides in my area usually going up north.
Unfortunately, after getting a 2nd job, I haven't been able to ride much.
You can email me if you like kindotmakathotmaildotcom

BECAUSE the purchaser is non-EU resident and bringing it outside of EU, there WONT be a VAT charge*. of course then it is susceptible to IMPORT charges to destination country. thats handled at customs on the way in.

*they can claim this at the last schengen airport of departure , and afterwards by mail. not sure how it works for huge items though. for things like wristwatches, i bring the item itself and the invoice/receipt to the landside duties booth (with my passport) so they can stamp the paperwork. paper gets mailed back to the vendor and vendor initiates vat refund
