I am in Toronto and I love my Aeroad, but most of the shipping stories are true.
If you don't mind waiting, you are better off waiting a few months for them to hit North America unless your family is able get the VAT refund.
For me, I purchased mine during last years TDF sale and had it shipped to my family in Hong Kong. Hong Kong has no sales tax and no import tax, but the shipping from Canyon was hefty, but still less then the vat that I was able to avoid. I then had someone bring it over from HK which added another $200cdn in oversize luggage cost.
I've ordered the lowest model with mechanical Ultegra, which did not have the integrated handle bar and stem. Before ordering, I've spoke with customer service asking if I could order the integrated handle bar with my purchase, and what it cost. I was quoted something like $250usd with all the spacers, dust cap, basically everything I needed for the integrated bars. Feeling awesome, I waited for the TDF sale, and made my order. Since I could not add the extra parts using the online shopping cart, one hour later after ordering the aeroad online, I emailed them asking to add the integrated handle bar and a oval 7*9 carbon seat post clamp to my order. They reply next day stating that it was too late and that the handle bar is not $250usd but $400usd and that I had to add another $100usd for shipping. Even when I show them the quote i got from email was to no resolution, I sucked it up and paid $450usd for them, they knocked off $50 after countess email bitching. Being that they do not ship to Canada, as stated, I had everything shipped to HK, and the bike and parts became a second order. So, many moons later, the bike got to HK safely, and they made a mistake and must have shipped the parts using my credit card address vs shipping address and they came to Canada. They further messes with my plan as I had to pay another $100 is tax and duty for the parts. Not only that, a screw for the handle bar cable cover was missing and they sent me the 7*9 saddle clamp for the ultimate, not the aeroad. They ended up shipping the screw and another saddle clamp MONTHS later to HK free of charge and they paid for the duty and cost of shipping for the original mistake to Canada. However, this time they ship me the original saddle clamp and not the 7*9. Talked to canyon, and months again later, I finally got the right saddle clamp. I don't know why it takes 2-3 months before they ship out these small parts. The experience for me was not the most painful as I was recovering from a crash and couldn't ride anyways, but if I needed that bike for summer time, it would have been ugly.
Also, I believe my family member is going to a city where there's a Canyon boutique. Don't they stock bikes there anyway or ship to a store?
I guess waiting for them to hit the US shores is an option and hopefully Trump continues to mess it up @ the White House and have a the US $ fall.
