Decided I needed a set, and really like them except for the form factor. For those of you that have deconstructed these, how do you mount, and what are you using for button covers. Tried going naked, and I guess it would work, but didn't seem like it was practical.

When riding at my limit I really like the big buttons of the shifters. Yes they are quite ugly to look at but they are 100% functional and mistake-proof. The last thing you want is a mis-shift at a critical moment.

I thought this thread was going to be about down tube shifters, which were used in the 90s to save weight when climbing compared to the relatively new sti combined shifters. It was common to see a downtube shifter for the front mech and then just a lightweight brake lever and then a normal sti for the rear shifter/brake.

Looks way bigger than it is in real life! But climbing switch buttons, taken out of the giant case they come in, attached to back of bar with Sugru. Team Sky do something similar but they add extra little buttons on to make them easier to push. But this works well for me.

Exact same stem and bar combo. Thanks.

You didn't add anything to the deconstructed shifter>

I did the same thing (except I painted the whole thing black.)

Dying to know if anybody found any small buttons to make them easy to push. With gloves, it is impossible to fell and press them...

Hey, sorry for hijacking the thread, but I think my question can be easily answered - can the new climbing shifters (ST-R9150) be programmed to function exactly like the sprint shifters? (SW-R610).
I've checked the PDFs on the website: http://si.shimano.com/pdfs/um/UM-71G0A-000-00-ENG.pdf / http://si.shimano.com/pdfs/um/UM-7FL0A-000-00-ENG.pdf and the Operation section is basically identical. As far as I understand these two can work in the same way (or rather they do work in the same way). The only differences I see are: the size, mounting options (climbing shifters can be mounted in more ways) and the wire length.

I'm asking because the ST-R9170 levers don't have the sprinter shifter port.
