I had some spare time today so I decided to make my old specialized road shoes lighter and more comfortable with laces
Saved me 62 grams so I can take two more energy gels to my rides
Anyone else bodged something like this to his shoes? Hahaha

Been using pair of Bont tri shoes for the last 3yrs. You're supposed to put eyelets, so that your shoes will last longer (stop laces cutting through the fabric/leather) and the laces freer to move. But I didn't, and the shoes have lasted (I won't say well, because one hole got cut through. But I just punched another next to it).
I also removed the rubber edge bumpers etc.
Less is more.
Oooh nice hack! Might try this too
I got inspiration here

Very nice photos of the progress and the shoes ☺️
It's one of those comebacks just for the sake of changing, not because better or any special reason.
I do have a pair of shoes where the Boa broke (impossible to replace) and I could do this just for being able to keep using the shoes as a spare pair.

I do miss my old Maressi's however. Other than that I've no idea why anyone would want a lace up shoe with clip less pedals.boots2000 wrote:Funny- I have ridden since the 80's.
I remember when we couldn't wait to get rid of our lace-up shoes.

I've been thinking of doing this with some older shoes to use them on the track.
Does anyone have any experience with installing eyelets?
