No, you research how to spot a fake before you buy a used frame.
Perhaps buyer should request from seller a proof of purchase or verification from canyon that product is legit. If it smells like shit then it's probably shit.

1/2 the people didn't even know there are fake Canyons to begin with.
Would you check online to research on how to spot a fake Honda Civic?
If anything, this is to be blame by Canyon for not protecting and educating their customers.
Yes, pirated company copied their design and is making money off their R&D and brand recognition.
Best they can currently do is shut down their ads on Aliexpress, dhgate, alibaba, taobao, etc.
Fakes are evil, and goes to hell, blah, blah, blah.
Something similar to Zipp would be nice, that they post how to spot fake wheels and handle bar. Even they are not upto date on this.
There isn't a lot of information on how to spot a fake Canyon, and some copies are really really well made. Research can only go so far.

Too funny, canyon is not to blame. As a consumer you should take all the necessary action to protect yourself. If I am buying a civic and I request for a history of service and he or she can't provide it then that's more than enough for me to skip that sale. If you are too naive to believe anyone that easily then perhaps you need to do research on how to make purchases online without getting scammed. Do not trust anyone without any proof to back up their words.

Perhaps Canyon is not to be blame, that probably is too harsh of me.
Civic example: You buy a two year old civic, and the guy tells you he does his own service/oil change. Would this red flag and you walk away a good deal?
I understand I may not be providing the best argument, but blaming everything on the poor guys doesn't seem right.

Actually Canyon as a brand is protected quite good as they offer direct sales only. So every other place to buy a new Canyon by default should be suspicious

With no documentation then you are at a higher risk of being scammed. Hard way to learn but it happens to many who doesn't do their homework. Support your lbs and help keep them in business.

Very true, I have no doubt mine is legit.
But this is the first brand new bike I've bought, all my other 4 bikes was used.
I guess they are under no obligation to protect 2nd hand market sales.

Most of my LBSs are incompetent enough that they deserve to go out of business.
mattr, either you live in Hick Town or you shop at WalMart, find yourself a good bike shop, lot's of them out there.
The Civic example is bogus. First, counterfeit cars do not exist so it's not something people need to look for. On the other hand, when buying a used car you need to look for service, crash damage, or odometer fraud. Most people will get a Carfax and have a mechanic check out the car.
Similarly, if you are trying to buy a Rolex off craigslist you better make sure you know how to spot a real one versus a fake one or have it checked out by a Rolex specialist. Still, I can tell you that are fake Rolex that can fool a jeweler. They might have a Rolex movement but could have other parts that are fake.
