Found this pair in a set of Ultegra 6800 STI cables, but never come across them before. They're made of soft, flexible rubber, and the hole appears only large enough for a gear cable. Not shown in any dealer manuals or exploded view diagrams that I've found.

I've fitted plenty of Dura-Ace 9000/7800/7700/7400 and Ultegra 6700/6600/6500 in the past, and these are new to me. Where do they go, and what are they for?

They look like dirt shields. one would go in front of the rear cable stop. the other would go where the FD cable exits the frame.
There's sometimes a buggy.
How many drivers does a buggy have?

One.

So let's just say I'm drivin' this buggy...
and if you fix your attitude you can ride along with me.

There should be an outer end piece with a long stem that those fit over. They are on lots of the shimano dealer paper work, mostly the MTB stuff.

You possibly got an 6800/xt cable set, not just 6800.

Thanks for that. Makes sense now.

I can see that they may be inclined to come adrift, although the end of the nose section of the corresponding ferrule has a projection that looks like it's designed to try to retain the sleeve in position.

Usually stay put until you slide them off!
