A friend is trying to convince me that the best setup for tires is staggering the front and rear width on 8.9's.

What is the best tire choice?

To clarify, I'm looking for suggestions re: tire width, and if people use different widths front and rear.

Front tire width affects air resistance a lot, especially at typical low yaw angles, which is an argument for a narrow front tire.

The rear tire usually carries more load, and its width doesn't affect aero much at all, so you have the freedom to run a wider tire at the rear if you want to without being slowed down.

It also doesn't hurt (except over rough terrain...) to run a narrow rear tire.

So you could get a 23 & 25 Veloflex combo, or 2 x 23s ;)

Is 23 really more aero with these than 25?

With a 18.2 mm internal width, the 23s will be almost 25mm wide, other brands (Conti!) much wider.

25s will definitely measure over 26mm - wider than the 8.9 brake track and thus probably sub-optimal even in the high-yaw conditions these wheel are optimized for.

So, a tire that measures 25mm mounted will work well, most tires with 25mm printed on the sidewall probably won't. However, the differences are absolutely marginal and you should run whatever gives you the greatest satisfaction.

I was about to order a staggered setup (you guessed it, Veloflex clinchers) but decided to go with 2x23 just for asthetic and weight (hey, 10g lighter!) reasons.

25 and 25... Depending on the rim, the tyre can actually roll better and such because of more width.

Enve SES were optimized for 23mm tires, if I remember correctly.

The first generation were - the 3.4 and the 6.7. The wider 4.5 and 7.8 were optimized around 25mm tires I believe.

Beleieve ses has a 19mm internal track for front wheel and 17 mm internal for rear, go for 23 on both let the rims do the rest

3.4 and 6.7 are narrower than the 4.5 and 7.8. There is only one iteration of each wheelset that I am aware of.

Correct with respect to widths.. g1 = smooth brake track g2= textured track

I don't have much to add regarding widths for aero.

But 25mm for a faster rolling tyre setup? On my 404's I run 23F 25R, so aero and flush on the front, and faster rolling tyre on the rear, where most of the weight is carried.
