I like how you made the 12-32 by combining a couple cheap Shimano cassettes. I dislike the big 19-22 jump on the SRAM. Huge jump in the middle, sort of, cassette. Exactly where you do not want it. Idiots at SRAM. MUCH better would be 19-21-24-28 instead of the dumb 19-22-25-28 they used. Move big jumps to the end of the cassette. The big final jump on all the cassettes is meaningless. When you need your lowest gear, a big jump is welcome and wanted.

A more sensible option would be to run compact chainrings up front (34/50) so one could use a tighter cluster in the back without huge jumps. I'm running 34/50 and 11-28 combos and couldn't be happier. Btw the Sram 11-28 is much better geared than the Dura Ace 11-28. The D.A. omits the 16 and jumps from 15 to 17. Sram has the 16 but loses one larger cog.

12-32 is basically 11-28 with 11T replaced by 32T and minor difference in bolded middle block:

11_12_13_14_15_17_19_21_23_25_28___ bold jumps: 13.33% 11.76% 10.53% 09.52% 08.70% (11-28 shimano)
___12_13_14_15_16_18_20_22_25_28_32 bold jumps: 06.67% 12.50% 11.11% 10.00% 13.64% (12-32 custom)
11_12_14_14_15_16_17_19_22_25_28___ bold jumps: 06.67% 06.25% 11.76% 15.79% 13.64% (11-28 sram)

if you don't hate even rear cogs - there is not much difference, except weight and last cog 14.29% jump (as RussellS said it doesn't matter)

11-30 is more different from 11-28, because it have jump 15.38% in the middle :

11_12_13____15____17_19_21_23_25_27_30 (11-30 shimano)
11_12_13_14_15____17_19_21_23_25__28__ (11-28 shimano)
11_12_13_14_15_16_17_19___22__25__28__ (11-28 sram)

Between the SRAM and Shimano 11-28 cassettes, I slightly prefer the SRAM gearing. A little better. But both messed it up. Far superior would be SRAM's 11-17 straight block. Then add on 19-21-24-28. The SRAM 19-22 jump is too large in the middle of the cassette. Dumb. Big jumps to the final cog are great.

The compact gearing with 34 chainring still does not get you close to a 1:1 ratio unless you use the 32 cog on a cassette. For mountains I require a 1:1 ratio so I can sit and climb somewhat pleasantly. No standing and straining and sweating required.

Sunrace 11-32 uses 19-21-24-28 (added to the first post)

11_12_13_14_15_17_19_21_24_28_32

for 11-28 they use shimano cogs style

I think your 11-30 gearing is incorrect.

According to bike24 it´s: 11-12-13-14-15-17-19-21-24-27-30

I love my custom 12-32 cassette by the way. The jump from 16 to 18 (12,5%) is not that big, so nice jumps from 12-22, with a little bigger at the end.

I'm a weirdo and use a Shimano 11-40 on my BMC RoadMachine02... The jumps don't bother me as much because I like having 50x31 as a usable gear in the big ring. Sure does make punching up sub 2min climbs a lot easier and I can get right back on the gas at the top immediately as opposed to bumbling around with the chain to get things in order again. And when it comes time to climb, I can just drop straight down to the small ring while I'm already on the 31t at the back and settle in... When my cadence starts dropping to stay from going into the red, I still have two more gears to go down to if I need them.

Glad to see SunRace makes a 11 speed cassette with good gearing in the 11-32. Not sure what the quality of SunRace is compared to Shimano or SRAM.

I am running either 11-36 or 11-40 on my road bikes as well, and love it for the same reasons you mentioned.

How often do you use the small front ring and 36 or 40 on the back? I imagine not very often. It seems like a waste to have a gear or two that you just don't use very often. With your gearing you will have big jumps in gear ratios when just rolling on the flats at 20mph. I don't use my 34-28 very often and I climb a lot. The slowest speed I can handle on the 34-28 is about 4mph. Any speed slower than 4mph I'll fall over so I don't really see the point of having a 40.

I'm 245 lbs... Anything over 6% is anaerobic for me in 34x31. I also prefer to spin at 90+rpm...anything below 75rpm feels like grinding to me. Where I live there are lots of short, STEEP pitches. So to answer your question, I use the 37t and the 40t quite a bit.

Ok. Thanks for the detailed explanation. At that weight and the type of terrain I'd agree a large cassette is needed. I have a tandem in addition to my road bike and not surprisingly I also run a wide gearing range (30-39-53 and 11-36). I bet you also use the 50-11 quite a bit, as I also do on the tandem. Wide gearing on the tandem was not a problem as the speed changes very dramatically as soon as the road goes up or down. Whereas on my road bike the speed changes very minimally with my light rider weight.

Another fat-ass here; 225 lbs :) I don't use the 36 or the 40 a whole lot, but it is nice to have as a bailout gear on the steep hills.
