Who actually owns a Parlee Altum and can shed light on maximum tire size?

I know Parlee claims 28mm, but I doubt you can actually run a Conti GP 4000 II 700x28 on an Altum.

What is the largest tire that actually fits well?

Ok Boots, just for you I did a quick experiment.

Took off my Mavic Ksyrium Pro Carbon SL (17 mm internal width) and installed Pacenti SL 23 (version 1) with Conti GP 4000 S 25 mm pumped up to 100 psi (at this pressure the width of the tire is getting pretty close to 30 mm).

The closest spot is between the chainstays. There is tons of room everywhere else (the front fork has massive clearance). With that tire/rim combo I had about 3.5 to 4 mm on each side of the tire. IOW lots of room. If you went to 28 mm on that rim it would fit but would be close. On an even wider rim a 28 mm might still clear, but would be too close. Any 28 mm would fit easily on a narrower rim.

From what I have seen there is as much tire clearance on the Altum as any other decent road bike including the Trek Domane which is quite generous in this regard. From what I know, short of going to some disc set up, cross, gravel grinder, or bullshit all-road boat anchor, you won't do better in the tire clearance department.

Do you want the 28's for ride or Flotation on bad surfaces?

Ride wise the Altum (and basically all Parlee's) tend to have a great ride so something like a 25mm GP4 works fantastic (more is not really needed) and basically measures 27mm wide on a 17mm internal rim - put it on something wider and it's even bigger.

The 28mm GP4 measures 31mm wide on a 17c rim - good data here http://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com ... i-23-25-28

Still looking to hear about largest tire that people can run.
I already use Conti GP 4000 700x25 on my current bike.

I'm running G+ 25's both tubular and clincher on my Altum R with plenty of clearance...

I have run the 28mm Vittoria Corsa G+ on Enve SES4.5 in my Altum without a problem. Chainstays are indeed the limiting factor but there's still some room there in that setup.

FYI- Schwable One 700x28mm fits in the Altum.

The Altum I had went to the Editor of another magazine. I've just read his review draft - his main beef with the bike was that 27c Challenge Paris Roubaix tyres on wide rims rub the frame.

My understanding is that the "28mm" refers to the actual clearance in the frame, rather than available clearance for a particular tyre size.

Challenge Paris-Roubaix 27mm tyres fit in frame on Reynolds rims (17mm internal width), but chainstays are very close. 28mm Vittoria Corsa G+ fit without a problem.

Very close make it "not an option" in my book.
Thanks for the tip on the Vittoria. I may try them after the Schwable One.

When Parlee says 28mm, I believe they mean that, rather than 28c.

I run 25c Conti GP+4 on Hed+ rims (25mm). This combination of tire and rim is quite wide; I wouldn't go wider on this bike. As mentioned, the chainstays give you about 28mm tire clearance.

My new Altum R frameset just arrived - 26c Grand Bois Blue Cerf on a 25mm wide rim has about 4mm clearance either side on the chain stays.

I thought the R was discontinued?

Doesn't mean you can't still buy them!
