Ultegra update?
Moderator: robbosmans
Never really paid attention to launch timetables/dates, but how often after releasing new Dura-Ace groupsets does Shimano typically follow it up with a new Ultegra group? And based on traditional paths, I would guess we're looking at very similar re-design of the derailleurs once they do, no?

I'll assume Dura Ace 9100 is the impetus for this question. But is 9100 really a new version of Dura Ace? Looks like very, very minor refinements of the 9000 version. I sure do not consider it a new groupset despite the number change. So I think you are reaching to expect anything new from Ultegra except minor improvements incorporated throughout the years.
Huh? It's a pretty major overhaul. New RD and FD design. More unified shifter shape between Mechanical/Di2/hydro. Added disc calipers. Update to rim brakes. New wheel design. Added a powermeter. New crank design. Probably missed a few things.

9100 is only minor as a mechanical update. when paired with disc , eps and a power meter, its much more.

I'm with @glam2deaf on this... 9100 looks like a big update. Front and rear derailleur design is quite different. I like part of what they've done with the front derailleur. Spooling of fine tuning adjustment instead of a finicky inline cable tension adjuster messing up the aesthetics of your front end, makes it much easier to dial in the front shifting I would presume.
The rear derailleur changes are much less to my liking. Unless you're running big huge pie plate gearing or 1x systems, it's a mountainfication of the road bike that's unneeded IMO. I really don't like the added piece, basically an extension of the current rear derailleur hanger on road bikes. They call it direct mount, but that really only applies if you're directly mounting it to a thru axle or however those mountain bikers do things nowadays. . Someone tried explaining to me in another thread how adding that extension onto the existing hanger doesn't cause any extra leverage at that point, but I still didn't really understand the theory. I haven't given up on trying to understand it better however, when it actually shows up in my hands.
So yeah, some significant changes for sure and that's just the front and rear derailleurs I'm addressing. Which are kind of important pieces in the grand scheme of things.

i agree r9100 is a minor update/evolution to dura ace 9000. The comparable Ultegra would be a similar improvement. Maybe if we're talking hydro disc / electronic shifting version then perhaps.
