Slated for release by Summer 2017 and already announced ~ 6 month delay towards end of 2017?

Where do you have this information from please? Announced by whom? Have a link?

Sorry, but I've already said too much. I work for a bike frame company that's a Shimano OEM partner. I wasn't at the meeting and was told this by my co-worker so there's a chance that I'm off by a few months or incorrect about the naming but I think this info is right.

R8000 series naming. Think M8000.

I look forward to the ST-9170 "equivalent" (ST-8170?).

We'll see the announcement sometime around mid~late July.

Its their typical schedule relative to DA releases and has been for the past 12~15 years. As for naming, probably along the same lines as the MTB groups. But I have no privy to the information at this point though.

Maybe we'll have more information trickling out come end March when the Taipei bike show rolls along and more OEM's get into the know of things.

Really looking forward to the new ultegra because it will be another 2nd generation disc brake groupset or components. New Dura Ace is fine but its unfortunatelly very pricy for me. Ultegra should do the trick. Groupset naming isnt all the important tho. But i have a feeling that they will continue for one more cycle in the 6xxx series since the Ultegra 6000 started in 1974. Quite a tradition. But they might have hired some new PR pepole who thinks better and will call it R8000. who knows :)

I have DA 9000 on two bikes and 6870 on my gravel.
6870 is so good i have zero complaints. I would seriously skip 9170 for a new UL group on a new bike.
Bikes:

Ax Lightness Vial EVO Race (2019.01.03)
Open *UP* (2016.04.14)
Paduano Racing Fidia (kind of shelved)

Ex bike; Vial EVO D, Vial EVO Ultra, Scott Foil, Paduano ti bike.

So if you're riding a roadbike without disc's, the new ultegra wont ad anything besides design?

no more 6xxx cycle, R8000 is actual group name (in sync with M8000)

new fd/cranks - new R9100 chainrings/cranks spacing (also new 105 fd will be released for this spacing FD-5801)
new pedals - same weight/materials as old dura-ace (PD-9000)
new cassettes - all combos (11-30T), plus one special 11sp cassette 11-34 compatible with 10sp freehub (CS-HG800)
new rear derailleur - SS same as R9100 (capacity 35T, max 30T), GS version (capacity 39T max 34T) - different to 6870

11-13-15-17-19-21-23-25-27-30-34

Shimano 2x road transmission with 1:1

Its not out yet so no ones knows. They will probably bring the Shadow design of the rear derailler from R9100. And apart from different looks and higher weight it will be most likely similar to Dura Ace in terms of functionality and features of the groupset. I dont personally likes the current Ultegra design-wice, mostly the cranks so I hope they will step up the game a little bit.

No idea where you are getting the info but its all sound great. One 11-34 cassete for big mountains with 11-28 for the rest without any hassle with road link and B-srew raping is exactly what I wish for.

Same boring heavy hubs though?

Ultegra level dual side powermeter crank would sell well.

New crank spacing for 135 hub spacing is encouraging. Currently only R9100 and SLK Light DB offers that spacing.

@jlok,
Shimano also started making OEM Tiagra/105 level crankset with same spacing as R9100:
FC-RS510 (non hollow crank arms)
it can be paired with upcoming FD-5801/new ultegra/FD-R9100 (not for FD-5800/6800/9000)

@F45, no info on ultegra branded hubs, new unbranded thru-axle centerlock hubs:
FH-RS770 (302 g; vs old QR hub FH-CX75 325 g)
HB-RS770 (125 g; vs old QR hub HB-CX75 166 g)
they are replacing cyclocross hubs

ooohh.... the new hubs
FH-RS770 (302 g; vs old QR hub FH-CX75 325 g)
HB-RS770 (125 g; vs old QR hub HB-CX75 166 g)

If they are sub $100 for a pair like the CX75 that would be great for super affordable ~$300 builds that aren't total tanks.
