Would it be possible to have a photo posted here so that we can get a visual understanding? While I've seen these in the flesh, I'm trying to grasp what I can try to do if I naively decide to lift a pair...

Have you tried McMaster Carr? They might ship a bit more cost effectively

Ha, you lads might be onto something...
I was asking you. Theory was that the spacers would prevent the nut from pulling down through the sole due to too much torque. But since you didn't remove them I guess that's out the window.
