Quality Light Cup & Cone Hubs
Moderator: robbosmans
It seems to me that if one wants handbuilt wheels one is limited to Campagnolo Record in 32h black or various aftermarket hubs that all use cartridge bearings irrespective of price.
Is there a demand for Record type hubs in other drillings as well as silver?

We don't see a lot of demand for Campagnolo Record hubs. They are ok but hampered by being available in 32 hole only. Plus the QRs are of poor quality in comparison to the Shimano DA ones for example.

I've been riding a pair of wheels I built with cheapo novatec aluminum hubs and upgraded SKF bearings for a year now. I love them, cheap and good, I love how I just pass people by rolling down. Mind you Madrid is very dry so I do not punish them with the elements. I do ride about 450kms a week though.

There are plenty of cup-cone type hubs out there in all sorts of hole counts and color variants. White Industries comes quickly to mind.

WI uses sealed bearings in those hubs as your link confirms.

You're pretty much stuck with record or a shimano hub if you want cup and cone. Generally anything else cup and cone will be cheap and nasty.
It's very expensive to tool up for the cup and cone, especially if you want good ones, far cheaper to let someone else do the expensive tooling and just machine bearing seats.......

@fabriciom - I am not aware of any modern Novotec hubs that are cup & cone.
They all have sealed bearings and not loose balls.

Judging by the erroneous answers so far, on this and the other twin thread, I'm thinking that sealed bearings have become so universal, and cup and cone so old school, that there's a generation out there that don't know what it means.
