Hello,

I just switched out some Shimano 105 5600 175mm cranks for 5700 165mm cranks: both 130mm BCD 53/39T hollowtech II.

I noticed that the 5600 has a chunky aluminium axle, 5700 is a thinner steel one which seems like a bit of a backwards step; I wonder if this was to stiffen things up? The section of the crank arms on the 5700 are slightly thinner and wider than the 5600, I guess the 5700 is slightly more aero but possibly heavier and IMHO doesn't look quite as nice.

I was wondering if anybody had any actual weights or knows why the axle changed to steel.

I'm guessing the only difference between the 105 and ultegra cranks is finish and chainrings?

The background is that for a while I've wondered if shorter cranks would help my setup on my Triathlon bike so when I saw the 5700 crankset selling for £60 I thought it was worth a punt even if I only ended up using the chainrings off it (but then regretted not spending £90 on Ultegra, then I would have got a better set chainrings).

Unfortunately, I don't have any scales to weigh stuff myself.
