Is Campagnolo 11 speed just harder to get right than 10 speed was?

It all depends on your frame and rear derailleur hanger.

You have to try and get within Campy's specification to getting the rear derailleur pulley no less than 7mm from the cassette sprocket on the largest sprocket.

In Campy's instructions they say if you cannot achieve that, to go to a professional Campy service center to have it corrected. There is a good reason for that.

I got my shifting perfect, in fact feels better than Dura Ace once you get used to Campy's shifting, but it needed quite a bit of tuning. In short, you need to get as much chain wrap around the cassette as possible without interference of the derailleur plate touching the cassette.

To achieve this I had to do the following:

1.) Perfect hanger alignment.

2.) Adjust the spring inside the derailleur to the next hole, to get as much spring tension as possible.

3.) Modify my rear derailleur hanger by taking off about 5mm from the stop screw landing.

4.) Adjust the bottom ratchet screw all the way in.

On most frames, you may not have to go to this extreme extent, the main thing is to get enough chain wrap around the cassette.
