Hi,

I'm looking at the Genesis Equilibrium Disc for use as a winter bike.

The Disc 20 model has cable-actuated TRP Hy/Rd calipers, while the Disc 30 has fully-hydraulic Shimano BR-RS785 brakes.
I can get a "perfect" ex-demo Disc 30 for £180 more than a brand-new Disc 20.

As this would be my first foray into disc brakes, would you recommend paying the extra for the fully-hydraulic model? (the two bikes are otherwise identical, apart from the frameset colourscheme)

yes Shimano's R785 brake system is very good but lectonic shifting for winter use. If it is the kind of winter use I do then no you will ruin the mechs.

yes you would have to keep them clean i.e have more time than I do and enjoy standing in the rain washing a bike in the cold and probably in the dark. cheap mechs for winter.

If your winter is anything like mine than shimano mineral oil freezes solid. I stuck with fully cable actuated TRP Spyres.

Here's some good info on hydro performance in the cold.

Thankfully our British winters aren't quite that bad! More wet than icy...
