Upgraded to a new bike, and now I want to upgrade my old bike. What to do?

BRM, in most cases I would agree with you. But the OP has more in mind than just upgrading the bike. He (1) wants to use the project to learn how to build up a bike and (2) wants to match the gearing on his good bike. Those are 2 good reasons to spend the time and money in this situation. And if he sources the parts on line or used it might not even cost very much.

Yeah just do it. You're having fun, while it may cost you some money but as long as you're having fun i think it'd be worth it.

As for the fork, you can probably look for it from aliexpress.com but there's not much choices for 1 1/8. the oem market seems to move everything to tapered fork.
