Hi,

I have a technical question. Have my Focus Izalco Max build with New SRAM Force 1 group, love how quiet and smooth it is. Very easy to do maintenance and last minute adjustments!!! No front derauiller problems, chain rub all the typical problems you get with 2x11 group.
Well, last week I decided to start shaving some weight of my bike. Trying to get under 6300 g or(14 lbs).
I got new lighter wheels, shaved (360 g), Continenal super sonic tubes and tires ( another 160 g) and decided to go to SRAM Red XG-1190 cassette to shave another 170 g. Well, after installing it last night, I found myself trying to make it shift and work as smoothly and quiet as my heave SRAM PG-1170 cassette that comes with Force 1 group, and after couple hours I gave up. I could not get it to be as perfect as 1170. Making cranking loud noises on low, 11-15 cogs (chain to cassette noise) 16-32 was fine. Why???? I though all SRAM 11sp cassettes are compatible with all other SRAM 11sp components!!!! Is it possible that the chain used with 1170 for 4 months could be the problem, or is it something else???? Please help!!!!!

How many km on your chain? That could be it.

It has to be the chain, right???
Even though I don't have a ton of km on it, maybe 600-700 km at most.
I always heard people say that You should replace a chain every time you switch a chainring/ crankset. I guess same applies to the cassette!!!!!
Will try it next!!!

Thanks for your help!!!

Thats weird, at 700km there should not be any issues yet. I swap chains around all the time with no problems.

I also swap between these cassettes, and I have no problems. The chain would probably have become silent after a few rides.

I think you are right. If I stuck with the existing chain , it would have gotten better after 100 km or so.
Had no patients. I just can't enjoy my ride when all my components are not perfect.

If the 700km was ridden with insufficient lubrication or in rainy/gritty conditions it will wear much faster. Also, if the old cassette was already worn down it will prematurely wear down the chain as well.

Chains are relatively cheap. Buy the Shimano 105 or Veloce version to save a few dollars and replace them often. Cheaper than replacing cassettes

Good you found it was the chain but sometimes it can also be an unstraight derailleur hanger.

I put about 300 Km on the bike with the new cassette after i switched the chain and it's great so far. Perfect!!!!!
I was told by another mechanic at my LBS that even if i left the old chain on when i installed new cassette, it would get better after putting some miles on the bike. Did not want to wait so got a new chain.

By the way I LOVE the new Sram Cassette (XG-1190 A2). Super smooth and quiet. Best I ever tried. Highly recommend!!!!!

Yes, I also like my XG-1190. It's very quiet although I do get noise when I'm on the 28-tooth cog. The big cog is made of aluminum and thicker. Do you find the largest gear a bit noisy? Upon further inspection the narrow chain fits pretty tightly on the thick aluminum cog. And the extreme chain angle creates a lot of friction between the chain and cog.

I agree. Cross-chain and aluminum cog will do that. Although I am running Sram Force 1 (road group) 50t w/ 11-32. So, when I am on 32t cog, it should be considered cross-chain on any 2x11 setup, and on this 1x11 setup its as quiet as any other gear combination. Love it. Since we have no real climbs here in Chicago, just running hills I find the gear ratios i can get out of 50t/11-32 all I need!!!

I wish Sram will make the largest cog the same width as the other cogs. I don't use the 28 long enough (I use it frequently but don't spend a lot of time in it) to wear out the cog. Shimano uses titanium and steel and the cogs appear to be slightly thinner than the Sram steel cogs.

Yea but the Shimano cassette is heavier and it creaks and breaks.
