Oh no, its a Zipp hub question!

My 404's with the 88/177 hub have been great thus far, but when I spin the wheel in my fingers holding onto the axle, I can feel something when spinning the wheel, its not a notch/click but just a sensation.

The front, I feel nothing!

Both wheels spin very very well indeed when the bike is on the stand.

Any ideas? Wheels have done 400miles in dry condition.

Thanks

Maybe you are feeling friction? The bearings could be new but if they are not aligned or seated properly in the hub there be increased friction and/or accelerated wear. I have read that some new DT Swiss D240 front hubs come with tight bearings. After reinstalling the bearings all is good again.

Thanks.

The rear had no feeling at all when spinning the wheel and holding the axle,l with your fingers, I checked the wheels after every other ride, as I was concerned about Zipp hubs from people's comments on here.

The wheel spins lovely, very fast!

Thanks

An update.

The rear wheel now seems to feel more of a slight rumble, I could feel a light notchy feeling when spinning the wheel in the fingers holding the axle.

Seems odd that they have cover very few miles and dry ones at that!

Thanks

Has anyone else had problems like this with Zipp bearings before?

I think it's not related to bearing quality but rather bearing alignment. I would take it up with Zipp. They should know the cause and the remedy.

I think I shall.

Today I took the cassette off to give thing a clean and check.

With the cassette removed the wheel seems smooth, I popped the cassette back on and the feeling came back again, no matter how loose I did the locking ring on the cassette.

I shall be emailing Zipp tonight!

UPDATE:

I emailed Zipp regarding this problem, and they came back with the follow.

Is it rough in the dropouts or when spinning it in your hand? The bearing load should free up under QR load in the dropouts of the frame.

We recommend checking if the roughness is present when the hub is under QR load in the dropout of the frame.

I am not sure how I can fully feel the axle when the wheel is in the dropouts with QR on.

So Zipp is saying the bearing load will be reduced with the wheel in the dropout? That seems strange. The bearing load should go up as the QR adds bearing preload.

I don't understand how that works! Its applying pressure to the axle.

Zipp have just said take it to a local bike shop. So thats crap service!
