You said it right. Especially with the electronic shifts (where derrauleur cable doesn't get longer as time passes) there is no need for the cable catcher. Same is true for mechanical, if you maintain/adjust your cable tension frequently...

i run a Stronglight 48t (74g) on my Red22 Crank - very light and no issues.
