SRAM eTap with Garmin Edge 520 or 1000
Moderator: robbosmans
The weight and functionality with eTap have been both been excellent!
Has anyone tried adding their eTap current gear to a Garmin Edge 520 or 1000 computer yet? They said they released it in the new Garmin software, but as usual there are no instructions to be found anywhere on how to make it work.
Note: Garmin points you to SRAM - SRAM points you to Garmin. Each is excited to claim flashy press releases all day but not actually help. Not surprised but still frustrating after spending this kind of money.

This gives a good how-to reference for E-tap gear selection for the Garmin 520. It's after the components review in the article.

I would avoid the Garmin 1000 if you do long rides. Too many of my friends have had the battery run out before the completion of the ride. This doesn't seem to happen with 510 or 810.

My 1000 lasts over 8 hours with 20% battery remaining. HR & cadence sensors and Strava segments running.

Sram's new eTap has been acclaimed for its functionality and weight.
Wonder when I can buy one through online retailers.

The thought was enough to 520 .
Disadvantages screen is small , but it is recommended because of the weight 520 is lighter, longer battery life, even to the top .
Think of the screen is gonna be just fine division .
You do not have to bother until 1000 if the map is not necessary.

I have the Edge 1000.
If you don't plan on using navigation, then go for the 520.
The smaller size and weight of the 520 is a plus and I could live with the smaller screen too.
Also, when riding at speed or with full finger gloves, buttons are easier to use than a touch screen.
Apart from the navigation, all other functions are the same I think.
However, the battery issue of the 1000 is not really true.
Last Saturday, I did Liège-Bastogne-Liège (273 km) and I still had more than 10% battery left, with HR monitor, the magnetless speed and cadence sensor and the edge remote connected. Just don't go switching between screens all the time. Also, at food stops I pause the ride and switch of the screen.

I have the Edge 1000 and the battery life really depends on what features you are relying on the most.
I find that having the Navigation screen on during rides along with auto route will definitely drain faster.
I have done 65 miles with the navigation but not as my main screen which gets me down to 65% battery life left.
I do not use the Bluetooth, wifi, and the auto-reroute feature but always have HR, Speed, Quarq PM, brightness on 1/4.

Wifi turns off automatically, so you don't have to worry about that.
GPS mode however, is a huge factor. Always make sure you turn off the Poetin satellites!
