To make 12 speed work rear dropout spacing would have to increase to say 140mm given disc brakes are happening. There are alot of thkngs against it unless you thinm an 10to 50t cassette is right for you.

SRAM introduced their new 1x12 drivetrain for MTB.
How about 1x12 for road cycling?
I just wonder your opinions
They are definately lighter than 2 chainring drive train.
And I guess there could be a 'golden' gear ratio between 1 chain ring and 12 casettes.
But I don't know this gear ratio would be effective for pro athletes or us, weeenies.
1x12 for road would be cool. But hopefully not too soon !
10-36 11speed would be great!
I do a lot of big mountain rides. So I need a decent gearing range. 1x will either compromise on gearing range, or have big gaps between the gears. Neither is appealing.
I'm still on 2x for mtb use too.

Modern front shifting whether mech or elec is excellent. What do I gain by going to a single ring? Also, I know The Rules are essentially an extended joke but a 50t rear on a road bike - really?

I just looked up weight on 10-50 cassette. It's ~ 355 grams!

The jumps between gears would be too big for racing IMO. Keeping the right cadence with slight changes in pace/gradient are important for me.
For solo rides or adventure/cross when I can set my own pace, I think it a 1x12 would be nice and simple because you can get nearly the same gear range as a 2x
