So Campagnolo has launched it's "new" Potenza groupset today:
http://cyclingtips.com/2016/03/campagno ... -groupset/
http://www.bikeradar.com/road/news/arti ... ook-46643/

To me the changes to the existing Athena seem minor: new chainset, new rear mech, slightly different Ergopower levers.
This groupset should replace the Athena and become a direct competitor to Ultegra.
But if they replace Athena, this Potenza groupset will be their cheapest 11-speedsolution while Shimano still has it's 105 groupset which seems to be excellent value for money.

Potenza?... I would prefer a name that is somehow related to the brand's history.

It will replace my Force 22 on Wilier cross CX :) . Maybe except crankset, no 36-46 :( . Perhaps someone will do 46 chainrings for 4-arm C crank ?

Thats great news. Plenty of people love Campagnolo here in Mexico but find their prices impossible, I hope this more makes them more accesible for them

Why replace? They should keep Athena. Even for its name.

'Fourth tier groupset to fight directly with Ultegra', as one lot of people put it.

In other words, the groupset to show how crap Shimano stuff actually is.

"Fourth tier groupset to fight directly with Ultegra", that is only what Campagnolo fanboys want to believe. Ultegra competes with Chorus. And bests it. While being significantly less expensive.

What evidence do you base the statement that Ultegra bests Chorus on? Is it lighter? Does it last longer? Ultegra is undoubtedly cheaper than chorus but then chorus is actually marketed as being dura ace level, with record & super record as being a level above.

just saying but that's all you've got to go on the contrary.

On the contrary, the anecdotal evidence that Campag wears in whilst Shimano wears out is true in my experience. I have used ultegra & have some chorus parts & find that campag lasts longer, at least in terms of chainrings, sprockets and chain. Dura ace parts I have used are properly made & some lower end campag parts are equally pretty gash. I suppose it depends on what one values in a drivetrain.

Another group is the last thing campy needs. They have too many already.

It makes Athena look outdated and pointless now.

Think this way : market decide what is worth more, what less. Chorus is 50% more expensive than Ultegra being Campa "sale workhorse" ;)

Nice 32t cassette. Nice Shimano 105 pedals...at least throw Ultegras on there if that's the marketing target.

I agree that Campy has too many groups. They should drop Record and trickle down to Chorus.

But Chorus is a carbon group. And 105 seems several notches below Potenza.
