I’m looking to buy a Cervelo S2, but disappointed with their upright position. It's their common geometry across S2/S3/R2/R3/R5.
S5 is more aggresive, but sadly out of my price range

Current bike is Stack 574, Reach 395 with a 120-130mm (I keep changing) -6% slammed stem

Cervelo S2 56cm is Stack 580, Reach 387
Cervelo S2 58cm is Stack 605, Reach 396

56cm S2 would need a 130-140mm -6% stem
58cm S2 would need a 130mm -17% stem

Which S2 should I go for, or should I abandon the idea and go for something with a less upright position ?
Also, not used a 140mm stem before. Does it change the handling of the bike ?

I'd say the 56 for sure. It sounds like you're not 100% set on the reach that you like, but you can obviously adjust with stem length. If you're concerned about the higher stack, you could use a handlebar with a deeper drop and get lower.

Thanks. Is there anything to be aware of running a 140mm stem ? I note a lot of pro's tend to run -17% 140mm stems on non S5 Cervelo's seemingly without issue ?

You may also consider a bar with bigger reach to compensate shorter frame's reach, so you will not have to run such a long stem.

Keep in mind stack numbers usually exclude the bearing top cover too.

And it's still going to be quite a bit higher. 56 for sure.

Thanks a million folks for helping me make a decision. 56cm it is.
Thanks also 1415Chris for reminding me about reach on bars. Bike comes with 3T ErgoNova's, swopping out for AeroNova's (or Aerotunda's if I want more drop) gives me an extra 3cm reach on the hoods

3cm extra reach wow thats a lot from bar choice.

I'll echo the 56 as i think you will have more fit options. Regarding longer stem vs shorter, I'm not a huge fan of 140s. I like 110-120 range personally for steering response and carving a nice turn. Too short a stem can add to a nervous front end especially on an agressive bike. A 120 allows for a more controlled response. Too long well....too slow and then id think maybe a different geometry would have been more ideal instead. It normally depends on top tube length and stem length, head tube angle and trail to know what is right. A short tt with a longer stem can add some stability. Lots of science involved.Ymmv
