gel pads for handlebars
Moderator: robbosmans
I just bought some leather busyman bar tape and noticed it is quite thin.
I only ride without gloves (can't stand the feeling of them) so I'm thinking about putting some gel pads underneath the tape.
The bar is a Fizik cyrano bar and it's pretty thick, so adding a cork wrap first might make the tape/bar too much of a handful.
any tips on good gel sets, or some other solution?

I suspect that the gel pads will also make the bar too much of a handful for you.
Consider some tape that is also relatively thin - Liz Skin 1.8 tape or a thin model from Fizik. Check those at an LBS to see if the thickness might work in your case.

If you have some old handlebar tape you can just cut some piece to use as pads under the new.
AJS914, have you tried that in the past? How well did it go? Did you use anything stick under the strips?
I just used the existing sticky side of some old Deda bar tape but the wrapping it over is what really holds it in place. It results in double thickness on just the areas you want rather than a full double wrap.
I use the Fizik Gel tape on normal diameter bars. And wrap really tight. It's perfect for relatively thin tape like you're talking about. I've tried the thick 3mm Performance Tape from Fizik and didn't like it at all... it was too thick.

FWIW, I really like the Giro Zero gloves. They seem to have zero padding.

sounds like you never used the right ones.
what exactly you can't stand?
It decouples my hands/feeling from the handlebars too much, I like the direct contact with the bar, it gives me more feedback and a sense of control.
+ I really hate the tan lines short fingered gloves give me.

Specialized also do Gel segments for bat padding. 2 thickness options.

I would experiment with different gloves. In my opinion the bar tape is not the best place to look.
