Can any colnago owners explain why some c60s have a cut out on the rear triangle and some don't.

Most likely reason is that the C59 seat stays had a cutout and Colnago is know to deplete existing inventory of frame parts before using new production parts (this was a common practice through the C40-50 years with forks). So in effect some C60s will be built with the seat stay of the C59. So you probably have a C60 that was made with a C60 seat stay.

But it is not consequent.

I also clocked the difference when i was eyeing up C60s before i bought mine (a 48s, without cutout) and was curious, so investigated. It's purely a frame size difference - i doubt very much its to do with using up old tubing stock first - the C60 is a complete re-design after all.

The larger sizes (50s and above) have more space for an extended triangle above the wheel, and so the seat-stays travel further up before they join. On the smaller sizes (48s and 45s) the seat-stays are joined at the brake mount, thereby avoiding a finicky, small cut out (and I assume the brake mount strength becomes the limiting factor there).

You can see it clearly in the frames lined up in this colnago video, with their sizes helpfully marked up on masking tape on the top tubes. It's at 3 mins in... you'll need to maximise the window! :)

Yup, just a size thing. It matters :)
