Hi, I bought a Campy Record 10S Chainset to fit to my Litespeed Ghisallo and the Record Ultra Torque BB cups BSA thread. Put the cups in and pushed the RH Crank (chain ring side) and it went all the way in the the inner chain ring was fouling the chain stay. Never seen anything like it. Previously had an FSA K-force SLK compact with no problems. I thought that all ultra torque chain sets were compatible with the appropriate cups. Help!

Was this crankset brand new?

Agree it sounds odd. Chainline of a Campy crankset hasn't changed in many, many years.

Yep brand new from Merlin on sale. It almost looked like the frame could not accommodate a full size crankset as the 39T was fouling. Put the compact back on and the 34T is close but ok. As far as I know if I'm using ultra torque BSA cups.

The order was:

Not only has Campy chainline not changed, it is also pretty consistent with other brands.

Was the crankset in a sealed box?

Is the chainring fouling all 360 deg?

I'm wondering if it was messed with.

All looked fine and round. Looked new. The bearings went fully in so the arm touched the cup and it just felt as if the RH BB cup should have been 5-8 mm deeper as the 39T was on the chainstay. Embarrassing trip to LBS tomorrow to plead for them to fix it as it's the only bike I have mostly in one piece and Sundays my only day I can ride outside at the moment. Only changed the chainset because it was such a good deal and the chain and cassette were knackered at 8yo and about 30K. Knew I should have just bought a full Chorus 11 set but my Chorus 10 ergos and derailleurs are fine.

Chorus should not be any different.

You didn't answer the question as to how the crank was packaged.

Other than a bad frame I'm out of ideas.

in original box and looked genuine from Merlin Cycles, nothing to make me worry. Frames been fine for 8 years

Are you sure it is in the cups absolutely square and not a bit cockeyed leaning towards the frame? Were you able to put the NDS arm crank on? Try reinserting carefully with lots of grease with little back and forth movements. Hopefully you didn't cross thread the cups making the whole thing non square to the frame. Other than soemthing like that I'd have to say it's a frame clearance issue but that would seem really weird, although I'm not really familiar with the Ghisallo chainstays.

Calnago may have the best idea. You simply don't have the thing in straight. Either the cup or the crank in the cup.

Add in an extra wave washer and install both crank arms fully to see if it still touches. I would put some protection on the chain stay before hand just to be safe.

Hi cmcdonnell,

Has the frame BB shell been "faced" before installation of the BB cups? this should ensures the cup sits nice & proper on the BB.

The wave washer goes on the NDS so I don't see the point of this. In the UT system the DS bearing is firmly held in place by the retaining clip.

True, that connecting the crank halves will pull things together, but I'd think it better not to force things if the DS crank is somehow cocked.

I know how it works, I use Campy cranksets.
I was kinda getting at Calnago's point of installing the entire crankset fully to see if it sits properly when both sides are set up...
