Hi All,

This is my first post - Would love it if one of you could help me.

I currently ride in primarily flat conditions but on the odd occasion i do some hill work i would like to run a 12/29 cassette as I ride at a fairly high cadence.
I usually run a 12/25 campagnolo super record setup with 53/39 standard chain rings.

I expect to have to lengthen the chain but does anyone else see any reason why i can not change the cassette and chain length for hill work?

Look forward to hearing from you all.

Thanks

If your rear derailleur can take a 29, sure.

I and my brother changed 12-27t to 12-29t with 53/39 SR when we was in Italy (Dolomites and Granfondo Pinarello). We do this because chorus cassette cost less than buy a compact crank to use for only 2 month. Only notice a very little noise when inner ring-big cog. We dont change the chain. But again, we only use this for 2 month. My brother still have the 12-29t on a spare wheels.

Embedded in the question are three sub-questions:

1. will the upper jockey wheel have sufficient clearance to a 29T sprocket? - yes. you should read the RD instructions and adjust the "H" screw if necessary.

2. will a short cage RD have sufficient chain wrap for the combo? The total chain wrap is given by (29-12) + (53-39) = 31T. This is within the max capability of a short cage which provides full performance up to 32T (and performance past that, just not full).

3. in changing to a 12-29 will the chain length have to change? Maybe but not necessarily. If the chain was originally sized per Campy's small-small method then you should be fine. If the chain has any amount of wear then you should change it anyway when putting on a new cassette.

I have 12/29 and 53/39 on one my bike, depending on the slack of your chain perhaps you don't need to change the chains. and also how often you cross chain, 53 and 29. Record and SR RD can take 29T

If you're running at 12-27/12-25 now it should be fine. As everyone said you're at the max for chain wrap. Accuracy of your setup and how well your limits are set will make large/large and small/small less of a wreck.

I do have 53-39 & 12-29 right now. Works perfectly.

Fitted everything this evening including and new "Record" chain.

All working well on the stand. Will take a test ride of the next couple of days and report back.
