Hello.

I recently took delivery of a 2016 CAAD12 105, rim brake version, in the Black/Grey paint scheme.
This was the first time in many, many, many years in which I purchased an actual complete build "off the shelf". The intention with this purchase was, always, to strip it down and get rid of what I don't want (basically everything except for the frame, fork, and a few small parts). I figured while I am in the process I might as well weigh everything as thoroughly as possible and make a thread about it.

Why?
A few reasons:
1. The CAAD series is super popular, and with Cannondale's marketing push it will be a big seller among first time riders. Inevitably they'll wonder why the f- their bike is so heavy. They'll search on Google (or Bing, or Yahoo, or whatever) and end up here. Welcome.
2. We frequently get questions from CAAD users about the weight of components, you can point them to this thread.
3. Each part will be labeled as clearly as possible, with photo embedded (not attached) so anyone on the internet can search for "[part] + weight" and find a picture of the item on a scale. If they're smart they'll come back to this thread and see context, but we can't expect that from everyone.

Anyway, I'll break this down into three posts:
The first (this one) has the totals, the list, and the bigger concerns - frame, fork.
The second will go through the drivetrain and wheels.
The third will go through the contact points and miscellanea.

Ready?

Here's the bike, as delivered. No adjustments were made, no fitting done. It has been ridden 0 (zero) inches. Pedals were never installed (and not included).

I put it on a hanging scale and got a weight hovering at 18.06lbs measured from one of those imprecise hanging scales, as delivered.
To be frank, I think this is quite disappointing. In 2005 I bought a Bianchi Virata (STEEL with Carbon rear triangle!) and it weighed 18lbs. This is marketed as the "Aluminati" and touted as being X% lighter, blah blah blah. Really? Come on Cannondale.

Also, I can't wait to get rid of the atrocity graphics, warranty be damned.
Is it a Cannondale? Is it a CAAD12? "I don't know, maybe we need another logo on here somewhere... I think we have a few spare areas where we can fit in another one" is probably what the marketing & graphics department thought. Maybe their goals are to appeal to 12 year olds, and not humans with reasonable, thoughtful brains in their heads. CAAD12 is written 5 times. Cannondale is written 4 times. Then there's a bunch of the "tech" slogans... SpeedSave, BB30, ThinLine Tech, SI, blah blah blah. Seriously, like a person is mid-ride thinking "god damn that bike is so much better because of that ThinLine Technology!" or a rider looks down at their top tube and thinks "Phew! I can ride with confidence because I'm riding with that awesome SI technology" ? Thankfully they left the side of the top tube blank, only so they can accommodate their team sales with 'custom graphics' for the shop or team (example: Helen's Santa Monica and/or La Grange, InCycle, etc:. )

So let's get on to the weights. The scale was calibrated to "Handbook 44" NTEP requirements prior to session. Where necessary, such as a rubber band, box or paper towel, the scale was tared to the item in question.

The frame is 1054.1g bare.

That's crazy heavy, the frame is 1.1kg? I thought it was supposed to be lighter than a CAAD10 frame. This actually looks *heavier*.

For a 105 spec bike I don't think the weight is that bad. Surprised by the frame weight though

Frame and fork are not THAT bad considering the price, it's all the parts made from lead that are killing it, only kinda light part is the stem!

Claimed weight is 1098. Claimed weight for a painted 54 10 was 1150, so a 12 IRL is lighter. In the interests of comparison, my 54 CAAD10 in White came in at 1260 stripped, so this weight is in or around what I expected. Naturally claimed weighs are going to be with the lightest paint job. I don't see the derailleur hanger listed seperately, so it may also be included.

The fork is a big saving, though. My CAAD10 fork was the guts of 430g, without crown race and with a similar length of steerer. For another comparison, an 2015 SS Evo Hi-mod fork uncut is 336g out of the box.

Definitely! Although the end results will be 2 different tones powdercoat. According to this thread (viewtopic.php?f=14&t=99123), powdercoating is not only lighter than wet-painting, it is also better for the environment (no VOCs).

I will be having this frame (CAAD12) and another steel frame soda-blasted within two weeks, and I'll post the bare weight then. The other frame needs to be stripped of components as well, but time is a little limited right now so I tried to get in this CAAD12 strip first.

...Right, the CAAD12 frame is lighter than its predecessor.
That said, a Pro Lite Cuneo frame (which is quite affordably cheap!) is 1137g in 56.5 size with paint.... yes, with paint and a larger size. :shock:

As for the fork, I think Cannondale is cheating a bit.
First, when interfaced with the integrated headset it leaves a gap of 1.8mm between headtube and fork crown. This (in)tolerance level is simply unacceptable. My Stoked frame has a gap of .6mm! A LOOK frame, with the same integrated 1-1/4 taper design and integrated crown race on the fork has a gap of .6mm as well. ... Seriously Cannondale?! Seriously?
Then let's talk about the weight. 339g uncut. Not too bad, right? Their weight savings include: molded crown race and huge holes at the bottom of the fork ends. They also cheat a little bit by not having a crown which is fully circular. Not only does this cut the fork short (and leave a huge linear gap to the headtube behind the fork) it also makes that molded crown race non-circular as well, which may have led to that 1.8mm gap.

For comparison, my BMC 048SL, painted and uncut, straight steerer without any molded crown, weighs in at 345g. That's not even their "top of the line" fork.
A LOOK HSC 6 fork, with a fully circular crown, 1-1/4 taper and molded crown race weighs in at 300g. Yes, 300g.
3T produces a fork with 1-1/4 taper, *NO* molded crown race but a fully circular crown that weighs in at 285g with minimalist paint.

So, in a sense, Cannondale could have done a lot better with this. Knowing they have the capabilities, it's disappointing that the old CAAD10 fork was that heavy (yikes!) and their new one, with a bunch of cheating, still isn't as light as it could be.
