Red 10 speed mech hitting spokes
Moderator: robbosmans
Hi and Help. My sram red rear mech is hitting the spokes on the 53x 27 . Its a hand-built wheel. When I put enough spacers on the cassette for the mech not to hit the spokes the lock nut is not long enough to tighten up.
I'm using a brand new 10speed recon cassette [ gold]
any suggestions . Can you buy a lock nut with longer thread ?
cheers Ray J

Check the hanger. It might be bent. Also, does it hit when you are at 39-27?
Is the limit screw tweaked to it juuuuust shifts to the 27?
Thanks everyone . Its the skewer. I just had a quick release one that was lying around on the wheel. I just put my tune skyline skewer on and it's fine
Schoolboy error as they say. But it just shows how you have to try every single option. 2 hours of trying to figure it out and a post on here for help and then

Excuse my dumbness. But why is this a skewer issue?
No Its a fair question. I had these old skewers on the wheels while I am putting the bike together. For some reason when I put my tune skyline skewers on the gap is fine. Also I tried with some Bontrager skewers and the gap is fine. For some reason these old skewers seem to squeeze the frame or the hanger side a bit closer. Its fine when I don't tighten the skewers.
Hope that explains ok.

I've had a similar issue with a bent skewer.
