for one thing, the cheapest price i've seen on a gear shift cable is $9.61.... And the coating does fray/peel, which while should not affect performance (according to shimano) doesnt look great.

Keep the polymer cables. They are great. The peeling is a non issue. Change the outers to black SP41.
Yokozuna Reaction, very slick, very awesome! However, the none compressible brake cable housing has a larger than usual outer diameter and was a but of a problem for my 6800 shifters. It shifts great though. Highly recommended.
The Yokozuna inner cables ARE slick. The cables alone makes a difference, housings improves some more.

Its the polymer coating that makes them slicker than normal cables and works well in my experience. Its more noticeable on the brake cables. SP41 outer is also very good. So the combination of both works excellent. The coating can bunch up mainly around the exposed cable exit sections but it can be easily picked off with your fingernail. I've never found it to cause any braking or shifting issues.
i am currently using some generic stainless gear cables with SP41 on DA9001. They also work fine. I'd say 85% as good as any polymer cables. and are indeed much cheaper.

I have used the Yokozuna cables on a couple bikes and other than the housings being a bit stiff, I love the cables.

I'm using PowerCordz in their Swift housing with no issues. DA 9001 brifters and 9000 derailleurs, eebrakes.
