I recently put together a bike, carbon frame and ultegra 6800 group, and all's well now except for an annoying noise come from the crank area.

It sounds like the chain is rubbing on the front mech, but it clearly isnt. It only happens in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear and is at its worst in 1st.

The rear hanger was a bit out so I had the LBS sort that. There is no noise when running without a chain. The alignment seems fine so what could it be?

Any ideas?

you check the FD cage to see how its aligned with the chainrings? there's also a screw that secures and firms up the FD when shifting...requires gluing a little metal plate on the frame.

By first gear, do you mean the smallest cog on the cassette?
Amd if yes, does this sound only occur when the chain is on the small chainring or on both?
If it only occurs when the chain is on the inner chainring, then check your chainline because the chain my be rubbing on the inside of the large / outter chainring.

had the same with my 6800 group! The chain wasn't mounted correctly.
After mounting it like it should, the sound was gone.

I did check if it was rubbing the outer ring and couldn't see anything wrong.

Swannie, what do you mean by mounthing correctly? How do I do that?

I guess it's worth mentioning that the chain is a kmc x11l

my chain was an Ultegra chain, wich has a mounting direction.
I mounted it reversed...

I am experiencing a similar thing. Will likely take it to my LBS for a check-up. I'm running Ultegra di2.

Just checked again and there is no chainring rubbing action. I guess on further inspection the sound would be better described as rough in 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Perhaps this is Shimano's plan to make me upgrade to DuraAce ;)

I think kmc x11 means 11 speed.

Keep the suggestions coming, I'm sure we can get to the bottom of this mystery
