Colnago C60 carbon fiber origin
Moderator: robbosmans
Colnago C60 and it's predecessors are assembled in Italy, under Ernesto's watchful eye. I understand that at least the paint job and making the tubes and lugs out of carbon fiber - assembling the frame - is done in Italy.
Does someone know for a proven fact where the carbon fiber is manufactured? Is it made in some Taiwanese factory or perhaps by Toray? I'm just curious if even the carbon fiber would originate from Italy. It was just in my mind for couple of days so maybe someone knows?

As I recall, Colnago used to get their carbon tubes & lugs from ATR composites who also used to supply Ferrari. I also understand that ATR is now long since defunct & Colnago get their tubes 8 lugs made in Japan.
If the grand tours are like classical music, kermesse racing is punkrock, Belgian style.

That's good news that ATR is about to be resurrected. I expect that Toray may well be the manufacturer of the C60 carbon components, but I thought they were Japanese not 'some Taiwanese factory '

Why is this a question? Colnago C-series bikes are first rate and doubt an end user could distinguish it from the ride. What are you concerned about?

Nothing wrong with asking.
It's news to me that ATR was not supplying so I learned something new today.
I think no less of them now, still awesome bikes.

The ATR website specifically references cycling as one of their product lines.

Interestingly, Colnago is not currently listed as one of their customers (scroll to the bottom of the home page for the list).

Came across this website:

The main suppliers, representing 70% of the total market, of the type of carbon fiber used for the manufacture of bicycle parts are Toho Tenax, Toray Industrial and Mitsubishi Rayon, all based in Japan. They are the main suppliers in what is called normal tow (under 12000 fibers) carbon fiber, or commonly known as 1k, 3k, 12k weave, and UD carbon fiber. Recently another type of carbon fiber fabric became available, spread tow. As the name implies this type of fabric is made by "spreading" the tow, usually a 12k tow, to generate a tape that is much wider than the original 12k tow. The act of spreading the tow results in a more 2-dimensional distribution of fibers, thus the fabric made from the spread tow can cover a larger surface area, than fabrics made from standard tow using the same number of fibers. This leads to spread tow fabrics having a much lower weight than standard fabrics.
And yes, just because the carbon fibers are bought by Japanese manufacturers does that entail that specific parts including lugs are made in Japan...

Yes Colnago sources it's carbon from Japan - Toray. However, Toray tubes are now assembled in China.
I confirmed this with the head of Colnago in UK @recent Rouleur awards in London.
C59 - is Toray T800
C60 - is Toray T1000
both of the above are aerospace grade.

So, to confirm then: Colnago have their C60 tubes made in China?

Please don't say that phase "Made in China"
Lets just say high end carbon tubes and lugged by hand in Italy
