2015 Felt AR frame with a P2M - battery swap?
Moderator: robbosmans
I'm looking to add power to my "new to me" Felt AR. I am leaning towards a Type S P2M, but want to check if I can do a battery swap without removing the crank. As the battery compartment is access from the back side of the rings, I've read that certain frames require you to remove the crank to change the battery.

Can't comment specifically in regards to your felt, but I replaced the battery once in 12 months on my P2M.
The S type is a bit fiddly to get at the screws, but it only takes 5 mins to remove the cranks. You may as well do that once or twice a year as opposed to struggling both sides with the screws and also getting the o ring back in...

Well, it is definitely "on the limit". I'd say, you will need to take the cranks off (applies to 110BCD version).
Minimum bike categories required in the stable:
Aero bike | GC bike | GC rim bike | Climbing bike | Climbing rim bike | Classics bike | Gravel bike | TT bike | Indoors bike

I haven't had to change my battery yet but it doesn't look like you can do it with the cranks on. I also have the 110 BCD version. Probably the 130 would be ok. Like others have said, taking the cranks off once per year to replace the battery is a pretty minor inconvenience. I'm glad they used the cr2450 instead of the cr2032 thoough, I've had to replace that in my powertap 3 times this year.
I just recently purchased a Power2Max PM, intalled on a Rotor crank on a Cervelo R3. I haven't changed the battery yet, but I bought a set of extra long precision screwdrivers from Amazon, with magnetic tips, just to see if I could access the two tiny screws holding the battery door on, without removing the crank, which seems like a big hassle just to change a battery. I had no problem getting the screwdriver in there. Again, I didn't go thru the whole process, but I really don't anticipate it being a problem. Just fyi, the Power2Max has performed flawlessly since I bought it in Sept. - over 2000 miles so far!
What crank? If it's a Rotor crank its so easy to pull the drive side off you might as well just do that. I still run a classic P2M so I can do it with the crank on, however I've pulled it over a hundred times for various reasons with no issues. Full crank swaps in 5 minutes.

I installed a p2m hollowgram on my caad10.
I put in the battery after it was installed, was not really a problem,
Just used a long enough screwdriver with screw holes a,igned nearest to ground.
Pulling out the rubber caps was more effort.
The oring is put on after cap is screwed back, not a big issue to install either.
