Took the words out of my mouth. Funny, last year Cobb and Bruniel were saying Jans position did nothing with the bars in there posistion. I think they know armstrongs time is up, and are trying everthing to beat jan.

His seat position in other shots I have seen looks to be lower as well. May be temporary until he adapts to the more forward rotated position.

He's back to the AX brakes again too. Every time I see those I wish I had kept mine.

Just curious...

What's the idea of having your hands below the stem height?

Is this relative to the seatpost positioning?

Looks kind of Jan like

I agree

Yeah - looks like a copy of Jan's position - noticed he is also further back on the bike... Btw John Cobb should have nothing to do with his new style - This is work done by Trek in windtunnel ?!

What is that with Shimano AX? I had never heard about it and now I only read about shimano AX. (see my topic about rocking torque)

There was a great article in triathelete Mag in Dec on the "Cobb Slam" position for aero riding. This looks like a further extention of that.

As for the AX brakes. I am sure all those on Ebay at the moment will be double what they are worth.

The other thing that surprised me in the other photo's out there was a clincher on the front and a tubular on the back. Quess whn you have a support car you can run any combination.

How did he keep those little blue allen key covers in place? Mine always fell out.

Dura Ace AX (and 600 AX, etc) were part of the Aero craze of 1980-84. Claims were made for efficiency, and Reynolds, Columbus and Tange all made "Aero" tubes in steel as well. You could still buy Dura Ace EX (as used by Flandria in the late 70's), and some of the parts like hubs were the same, just different branding between AX and EX. The first index system for racing was part of the AX design, and it kind of worked, but then "New Dura Ace" came out in 1985 - specifically designed to beat the performance of Super Record, and life has never been the same since. It was at the end of this Aero craze that the Record-C group came out, with the Delta brakes and now classic hidden 5th arm cranks. It was kind of silly, all these ad's in magazines of guys on bikes with full length skin suits and crazy helmets, but to me it was also the start of aerodynamics coming into use, with wind tunnel testing (thanks to the Wright Bros - bike mechanics!) and culminating in Moser breaking the World Hour Record (51.151 will always be stuck in my head from him having the numbers engraved in the frames sold bearing his name of this time) using twin discs. Dia Compe used to make a pretty cool looking brake as well, and you could even find lower price versions of it on Raleigh Sport-Touring bikes of the time. It's during this era that brake cables started getting run along the handlebars, and 7-speed came of age, to be quickly followed by 8-speed in 1987 (introduced at the Paris Show 1986 by Maillard).

If I was going to build a TT bike today, I'd still fit a set of Modolo Kronos brakes to it (first introduced in 1978!). Didn't stop worth a damn, but so cool.....

I just saw a set of those brakes on ebay yesterday

Twilight zone stuff!

I am looking at building a "retro" a fixed wheel TT bike later in the year.

That's interesting that he's adopted a new bike and position. But.. that ain't his problem. I think his big concern shouldn't be shaving .5 seconds per mile but conditioning for heat. All that time he lost to Ullrich can't be made up by a more aero position.

I'll bet he's altered his training regimen to improve hot weather performance specifically (we'll see). You don't win 5 tdf's by being dumb (something that Ullrich has done BTW - been tactically dumb). Ullrich has a smart director and better team this year, it has all the potential of being the best tour ever.

Ye Balde One, did you have the AX hubs with all the spokes coming from the outside of the hub? Now that was a pain in the neck if you broke a spoke!

I'm rathur envious that you have a pair of Molodo Kronos brakes, they wre seriously light, bit scary though.... Did you ever have the pleasue of the wonderful downtube shifter coming off in your hand?
