I found a sweet deal on a NOS Colnago C59 frameset. It is a mechanical frame and I am considering taking a drill to the frame for a di2 conversion. Am I committing blasphemy?
Plan B would be to buy a new Dura Ace mech groupset. I'm on the fence; anyone take a drill to an iconic frame and then regret it?

My limited research tells me Colnago drills the frames at the factory for di2, so shouldnt be an issue for weakening?

I drilled my C59 for EPS with Zero problems. 10K miles since and it is perfect. Use a new sharp bit at high speed and three holes took about 2 minutes and done.

I've done it on a C59, job done by "our" Jure, and everything has been fine.
Bike was sold to another guy and as far as I know no problem at all.

If something goes wrong, what's your recourse? If you don't care then sounds reasonable, otherwise I'd go mechanical. 9000 Dura Ace mechanical is a great group set. I just upgraded, but kept Ultegra rear cassette based on reports on various sites.

Personally I would just use a mechanical group, too risky.

Fresh sharp drill bit with a steady hand and you'll be fine

For me a bike is a mechanical thing. No desire for electronic shifting.

No reason not to, if it's done right.

Ruckus drilled my Colnago EPS recently. Here's what it looked like. (It's being repainted by Velocolour now.)

interesting. was going to buy a c59 from a fellow. bike intended for my father. however turned out that guy wanted slightly higher than "standard" for a c59 plus it had a 9 mm dia hole drilled in it (quite neatly) at top tube/ head tube lug.

put me off and i offered him 2/3 of what he was asking. he rejected that. he did not seem to think that a hole being drilled in the frame warranted any discount (and of course he is entitled to his opinion). whilst i believe it would not impact on the frame's structural integrity, i was concerned about other buyers in the future should my father want to on sell it.

photo attached for interests sake. great colour scheme IMHO

do the holes on a frame made for Di2 or EPS have any extra carbon layup to reinforce the area ?

@Gona - keen to see the pics of repainted frame

This is interesting, I had toyed with the idea of drilling my Supersix but thought I was just being stupid really. But it seems it is possible and not totally mental!!! :?
