Question to those in the know. Now that UCI has come out strongly in favor of thru-axle vs quick release as the wheel standard for disc brakes what does that mean for those with hydro disc bikes designed around q.r.? Do they have to buy a new fork and get new dropouts or risk being frozen out of wheel upgrades going forward? Seems if someone were to look at buying a disc brake bike now , the only choice to make is thru-axle for no other reason than to have wheel choices in the future. Am I reading this wrong?

Are there even any thru-axle road frames available yet? I thought they were all QR still. With all the uncertainty of future disc brake standards, I will probably wait until this all gets sorted out in a couple of years before considering my next build.
It's all downhill from here, except for the uphills.

Trek use tru axles as does specialised.
All racing disc brake bikes should already have thru axle (if the manufactuer has any nouce it is obvious this is the way it way going to go). It is the sportive and commutor bikes that may not.
The question is which standard will everyone settle on if any one does come out on top
15mm/142x12mm or 100x12mm/142x12mm or will it be 135x12 or 135x10mm at the back. Too many I wish it was jut 15/142x12mm then people could use there MTB wheels in thee road bikes and visa a versa (not that you would) now for the sake of I don't know what there are so many hub standards you may have to have a variety of bloody end caps in stock at home to switch wheels between frames.

It depends what your mountain bike has... Most of DtSwiss hubs can be converted to almost any axle standard you want.
I used my old 29er OEM DtSwiss wheels in my CX disc bike (front thru axle, rear 135x10) straight away, just had to switch the freehub body to road 11 speed. There was a 0.5mm "difference", which was easily overcome through a little rear derailleur adjustment.
P.S. The MTB wheels, unless carbon, are heavy as hell, though.

well, anyone buying road disc with quick release is pretty much asking for support issues down the road.
If you were buying a caliper break road bike, I don't think anything has really changed.

Unless we end up with lighter disc's than callipers then why would you want to deal that if your a WW.
The whole design of bikes would have to change at the front end and I don't think it would ever be strong enough to get a lighter bike with discs.
Perhaps the carbon experts could chip in with their views.

I find that the buzz seems to switch between aero, light weight and disc depending upon what the industry is trying to sell at the moment. Interesting coincidence?

At the very least, lighter rims.
Pretty much the only place where you'd feel a difference between one 6.8kg bike and another.

I solved that. Two bikes. One built up lighter, one built up sturdier.
