Enve 3.4 or 4.5 Tubulars ???
Moderator: robbosmans
I would like some advice and point of views.....
I am considering buying a set of either Enve 3.4 or 4.5 Tubulars. (I currently own Enve 4.5 Clinchers which I really like, live in South Florida completely flat)
To be used for rides when I travel to Central Fla, some road races & crits where there are some rolling hills, mostly flats, highest probably 250 feet and total elevation around 3,000 - 4,000 feet.
Doesn't seem to be much difference in weight......any thoughts...
The specs on the 4.5:
Rim Depth:48 / 56
Internal Rim Width:18.5 / 17
External Rim Width:27 / 25.5
ERD:563 / 545
Built Weight:1312
Rim Weight:361 / 399
the specs on the 3.4
Rim Depth:35 / 45
Internal Rim Width:18.5 / 16.5
External Rim Width:26 / 24
ERD:584 / 566
Built Weight:1305.6
Rim Weight:367 / 392

Personally i would think it's boring buying two sets almost exactly same. Why not buy something else?
Reynolds 58 Aero (tub), Easton Aero 55 (tub) etc etc?

I have had several ones including those but prefer the Enve's.
Just thinking about getting a second set of wheels for those purposes and thinking the tubulars are lighter and may be better suited...
Get a crit wheelset and a road race wheelset.
For RR's either Enve 3.4 -or- AX lightness 38T -or- Lightweights
and
For crits how about something like Mavic CC 60T for the better braking and less expensive, so incase someone tumbles into your spokes.
If I were you I would just get one pair....a pair of Bora 50's (Fulcrum if you run shimano) and call it a day

These will be race day only wheels? My thoughts are that you'd get more use from another set of clinchers and for races in Clermont you really don't needs tubs. Maybe run latex tubes with 3.4s and have 2 nice sets. If you really want tubs go for it but with all the glass on florida roads......
If you do decide on tubs then why not 4.5s as they will serve you well for the rollers.....but personally id go with 2.2s for those trips to Georgia and those super fast descents.

Have you had the latest Aero 55 and more... and say Enve are "much" better?
I don't understand why you started the thread if you have had so many wheelsets and if Enve are so much better?
That says that it's already done!
I would seriously buy Ax wheels over Enve if your concerns is weight and stiffness.
Ax is still lighter than Enve and spokes holes are both molded and re-inforced.
My Stream 38 is still lighter than the latest 2.2 set.

Yes these will be race day wheels only. I won't be travelling to Georgia so the Highest elevations i will see are the Florida rolling hills. I am thinking Tubulars because they are a bit lighter and i can also use them for the Crit's......my thoughts...

I can only afford 2 sets....my current Enve 4.5 Clinchers plus another.....Just a personal preference why I am sticking to Enve.....
Enve 3.4 is perfectly geared for all-round machines.
To me, 4.5 is not for me considering its rim depth and weight.
