I just saw the 2.7kg bike which I'm sure you're all aware of:

This is from over 5 years ago and it struck me that a few developments have happened since:
- The 643.9g frame could be replaced with AX Lightness' Evo Ultra at 589g which is already a huge saving for a bike at this level.
- The derailleur could be swapped out for this: http://www.bikerumor.com/2013/05/29/fou ... erailleur/ or the existing SRAM Red one cut down to this: http://www.bikerumor.com/2013/12/02/fas ... erailleur/

There may be more.

How far has the technology come in this time, and would anyone dare to theorize on today's lightest possible build, considering how far things have moved on?

It's funny you would post this, just last week we took a new look at this one to see how it could be done lighter today. It may have already been 5 years, but there really isn't a way to move the needle much. You may be right that the Ax frame is lighter, but the problem with bikes like these is it isn't the weight of one given part that changes because that often affects the weight of other parts. So while the frame may be lighter, the headset and fork will both be heavier. You'd also loose the weight savings from having the down tube shifters.

You can shave a few grams here and there on different parts, but overall the total weight just isn't going to change much.
